Seasonal allergies can be irritating AF. You can go your whole life and never have them, or suffer with them every year from birth. Sheesh. But nature offers us some relief in the form of herbs. These natural remedies can help alleviate allergy symptoms and provide a more holistic approach to managing allergies. Remember, you don't have to go all in with herbs or all in with conventional medicine. You can combine both, if it is safe to do so. Here are some of our favorite herbs for seasonal allergies:
1. Mullein Leaf
Mullein is one of our favorite herbs for seasonal allergies, and it's very popular with our customers, too. Mullein is mucilaginous, so it does a great job at soothing irritated and inflamed mucosa and tissues. It is best prepared as a tea and you won't find a better one than in our tea Breathe™.
2. Nettle
Nettle is a well-known herb for its anti-inflammatory properties. It can help reduce the histamine response in the body, which is beneficial for allergy sufferers. Nettle can be consumed in a quick infusion, like a tea, but we also enjoy it as an overnight infusion - where the herbs are steeped in water overnight. We use the herb in Breathe™, our upper respiratory support tea. You can buy stinging nettles in 4, 8 and 16 ounce quantities at health food stores.
3. Yarrow
Yarrow is antiseptic, antispasmodic, and astringent. This powerful antimicrobial herbal remedy has soothing and nourishing properties that make it a great home remedy for the respiratory system, especially for dust allergies and sinusitis.
4. Goldenrod
Goldenrod is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antihistamine - everything you want in an herbal remedy for allergies. The herb is a pretty good remedy for congestion.
5. Ginger
Ginger is known for its immune-boosting properties and can also help with allergy symptoms. It has anti-inflammatory effects that can reduce nasal congestion and improve breathing. Our favorite way to use ginger can is to consume it in a tea (duh). But you can also cook and eat fresh ginger. We have a few ginger teas: Nip's Tea™ (lemon ginger), What the Flu?™ (elderberry ginger), and Yella™ (turmeric ginger).
6. Butterbur
Butterbur is another herb that is highly effective in relieving allergy symptoms, having substantial research done on it with positive results. It works as a natural antihistamine and can help with nasal congestion and sneezing. Unfortunately, when it is unprocessed, Butterbur contains a chemical that is dangerous. Therefore, you should only take Butterbur in tablet or oil form. We do not make any teas with Butterbur.
Conclusion
These herbs offer natural and effective ways to manage seasonal allergies. Incorporating them into your daily routine can help alleviate symptoms and provide relief during allergy season. Our teas are a quick and easy way to get those medicinal benefits on-the-go in your tumbler as you head into work or as a part of your teatime ritual. As with any herbal remedy, it's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before adding them to your regimen.
